Repotase: International Field Course 2019

The Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture IPB and the School of Environmental Science, The University of Shiga Prefecture in collaboration with the Mount Ciremai National Park to hold the 2019 International Field Course Program. Activities carried out on September 13-22 were attended by 29 participants. A total of 19 participants were students from The University of Shiga Prefecture and 10 others were IPB students from the Department of Plant Protection, the Department of Forest Management, the Department of Conservation of Forest Resources and Ecotourism, and the Department of Biology. In addition to conducting field studies, this activity was also filled with debriefing related to environmental health topics delivered by lecturers from the Department of Plant Protection and The University of Shiga Prefecture.

This activity was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Dr. Ir. Suwardi, M.Agr on Saturday, September 14, 2019, in Ruang Sidang 1 of the Plant Protection Department. The debriefing lecture was continued by Dr. Ir Suryo Wiyono (Diversity of Tropical Microbes), Dr. Idham Sakti Harahap (Diversity of Tropical Insect), and Prof. Takuya Takahashi (Forestry Policy). The first day's activities ended with a visit to the Soemartono Sosromarsono Insect Museum in the Plant Protection Department. The whole series of activities was accompanied by lecturers from the Department of Plant Protection, Dr. Suryo Wiyono, Dr. Sugeng Santoso, Dr. Idham Sakti Harahap, Dr. Yayi Munara Kusumah, Nadzirum Mubin, SP, M.Sc, and Hagia Sophia Khairani, SP, M.Sc

On Monday, 15 September morning, the group moved to Villa Kampung Gunung, Kuningan Regency and stayed for 5 nights. On the way to the villa, participants visited the Linggarjati Museum in Kuningan to specifically introduce the Linggarjati negotiations after the proclamation of independence of the Republic of Indonesia. The next day, the participants were welcomed by a team from the Mount Ciremai National Park Center (BTNGC) and Mr. Kuswandono as the head of the hall delivering a public lecture related to BTNGC's efforts in conserving natural resources and empowering communities around BTNGC. The lecture continued with a presentation from Dr. Toshinori Nakagawa (Animal Science), Dr. Masahiro Maruo (Aquatic Chemistry), and Dr. Sotaro Yukawa (Transportation Policy in Japan and Indonesia).

After completing all the debriefing courses, the participants conducted a 2-day field study (September 17-18) by visiting 5 locations. The five locations are around BTNGC and one of them is a private company. The locations visited were 1) A healthy farming practice area for rice plants utilizing superior seeds and PGPR microbes from IPB, 2) Sheep villages and manure processing from manure and Cibuntu Tourism Village which presented arts with various musical instruments from bamboo, 3) Conservation of god fish (Javan salmon), 4) Conservation of Javanese eagle and forest restoration using Prof. Miawaki, and 5) Management of CV. Jagaraga which is a drinking water company with a spring from Mount Ciremai.

On September 19, participants who had been divided into 5 groups discussed the results of the field study and presented their respective topics in front of the lecturers and Mr. San Andre as a representative of the BTNGC. In addition to presenting findings in the field, each group also provides recommendations for improving the management of conservation areas in the BTNGC. In the evening, participants enjoyed a campfire, Balinese dance and barbecue accompanied by entertainment from each lecturer and student. The activity in Ciremai ended with a visit to PT. Galih Aesthetic Indonesia on September 20. The company is an exporter of sweet potatoes to Japan and Korea and has 400 partner farmers in Java.

Participants' activities in Bogor were then carried out on September 21 by visiting the Tropical Horticulture Study Center at Tajur and visiting the Bogor Botanical Gardens. The event was closed with a farewell party attended by participants, all lecturers involved during the debriefing and field lecture, and Director General of Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems, Ministry of Environment and Forestry. On Sunday, September 22, 2019, participants returned to the National Monument and the National Museum in Jakarta.
