GUEST LECTURE 16: Getting to Know the Useful and Merciful Black Soldier Flies (BSF)

Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, IPB University presents the CEO of PT Biomagg Sinergi Internasional in the 16th Guest Lecture Series (24/5). He is Aminudi, CEO of PT Biomagg Sinergi Internasional, an organic fertilizer management company for urban waste who is also an alumnus of IPB University from the Department of Plant Protection.

With the theme "Knowing the Useful and Merciful Black Soldier Fly (BSF), Aminudi brought the webinar participants to dig deeper into the Circular Food Economy by utilizing BSF. According to him, by allowing organic waste, the waste will have a bad effect on the city.

“Organic waste accounts for 60 percent of the total waste in Indonesia. Without better and more effective treatment, this waste will have a bad effect on the city,” he said. He explained that the BSF maggot (larvae/maggot/maggot) has many advantages. Besides being safe for humans, maggot can also process organic waste from various places. Starting from farmers, wholesale markets, traditional markets, hotels, restaurants to households.

Aminudi also added that with this model of organic waste processing, farmers can also obtain fertilizer and feed inputs, so that integration between rural and urban areas will be formed. "Of the 60 percent organic waste, more than half is food waste. If managed properly, the market is large," he said.

He added, from one gram of BSF egg, it can process 15-20 kilograms of organic waste. From the amount of processed waste, it can be converted to 74 percent in the form of waste decomposition, 15 to 20 percent in the form of maggots, 10 percent fertilizer and 1 percent residue.

“The waste processing method using BSF can be done at home. Simple tools, such as used buckets and fly cages can also be used,” he added. According to Aminudi, organic materials that can be processed by maggot are vegetables, fruit, kitchen food waste (catering, hotels), fishery waste and Slaughterhouse waste (RPH), animal waste (laying hens, pigs, and quail), agro-industrial waste. , consumer good products (soy sauce, instant noodles).

He suggested that broiler manure waste was not effectively used for processing by maggot because the manure contains husks. “More information on how to process organic waste with BSF can be seen on the Magobox social media account. Through organic waste management with BSF, I believe Indonesia can create sustainable food sources and empower communities and the environment," he added. (Kumparan.com)
