Comparative Study Visit of the Faculty of Agriculture - University of Timor, NTT

Tuesday, January 31 2023, four laboratory staff from the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Timor – East Nusa Tengara made a comparative study visit to the research laboratory at the Department of Plant Protection (PTN), Faperta – IPB University. This visit aims to make a comparative study of the existing facilities in PTN research laboratories to develop a research laboratory at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Timor which will be built.

PTN is dedicated to teaching and conducting research in the field of crop protection. The department has several research laboratories that focus on various aspects of crop protection. equipped with modern facilities and equipment, such as microscopes, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, and molecular biology equipment. The laboratories are used for teaching and research purposes, and they are regularly updated to maintain the latest facility availability.

Timor University is a public university located in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Timor offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various fields of agriculture, including plant science, animal science, and agribusiness. The faculty has several research laboratories that focus on various aspects of agriculture.

The laboratory at the Faculty of Agriculture - University of Timor is still in the development stage and is relatively new. However, the faculty has made significant progress in equipping its laboratories with modern facilities and equipment. The laboratories are used for teaching and research purposes, and the faculty is working to forge partnerships with other institutions to further improve the quality of its laboratories.

Overall, although both institutions have laboratories that focus on different aspects of agriculture, the Department of Plant Protection at the University of IPB has a more well-known laboratory and is equipped with more modern facilities due to a longer history and greater resources. However, the Faculty of Agriculture - University of Timor has made significant progress in the development of its laboratory and has the potential to become a strong research institution in the future.

Visit of the Institute of Weed science, Entomology and Phytopathology (IWEP)-UPLB in the Framework of Benchmarking Curriculum

On Wednesday 25 January 2023, a group of staff from The Institute of Weed Science, Entomology and Plant Pathology (IWEP) paid a visit to the Department of Plant Protection (PTN), Faculty of Agriculture - IPB University. This visit is part of the collaboration between the two institutions in increasing research and development in the field of plant protection.

During this visit, staff from IWEP had the opportunity to meet researchers and staff at PTN. They discussed topics related to crop protection, including pest and plant disease control, the prudent use of pesticides, and environmentally friendly cultivation techniques.

During the visit, staff from IWEP were also given the opportunity to visit the laboratories and research facilities of the Department of Plant Protection. They discussed with the researchers the various technologies and research methods used in the field of crop protection. The staff from IWEP were also given the opportunity to see directly the research process being carried out by researchers at PTN.

This visit is expected to be the start of closer cooperation between IWEP and PTN. The two institutions can work together in developing new technologies and methods to increase agricultural production and protect the environment.

In this series of visits, a seminar on plant protection was also held which was attended by students and staff from the two institutions. This seminar aims to share knowledge and experience between IWEP and PTN and raise awareness of the importance of plant protection for the success of agricultural production in the future.

This visit is proof of the commitment of the two institutions in developing science and technology in the field of plant protection to improve farmers' welfare and protect the environment. Hopefully the collaboration between IWEP and PTN can continue to grow and provide benefits to the community.

IPB Professor Scientific Oration: Prof. Dr. Ir. Widodo, MS

Saturday 25 February 2023, a scientific oration by IPB University professors was held which was held at the Graha Widya Wisuda Building (GWW), one of the professors giving the speech was the professor of the Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture - IPB Unversity namely Prof. Dr. Ir. Widodo, MS. In his oration Prof. Widodo presented material entitled "Ecological Approach in Plant Health Management: Dealing with Cases of Stem Rot Disease (Ganoderma boninense Pat.) in the Oil Palm Rejuvenation Program"

The following is a summary of Prof.'s scientific oration. Widodo:

Although the existence of base stem rot disease (BPB) caused by Ganoderma boninense has been known to exist in commercial oil palm plantations for more than 90 years and there have been many research results related to this problem, practically this disease is still the biggest problem in production to date.

The writing in this manuscript discusses various factors that influence BPB disease development and its management ecologically by prioritizing pre-emptive strategies through thorough understanding of the fundamental characteristics of the causes. Based on data up to 2020, this disease is one of the important factors causing a decrease in palm oil productivity in Indonesia. BPB disease problems are increasing from time to time due to the accumulation of inoculum sources in the field and the influence of several environmental factors, especially the soil environment, both abiotic and biotic. Due to the characteristics of G. boninense which is a weak pathogen, all environmental factors that reduce plant fitness can trigger the development of BPB disease. The main environmental factor that triggers the development of the disease is soil health problems, namely the depletion of nutrients that are not matched by adequate intake (abiotic) and reduced abundance and diversity of biodiversity (biotic), especially beneficial soil microbes that act as biological control agents ( bio-protection), a producer of growth hormones (bio-stimulant) and as a bio-fertilizer (bio-fertilizer). Improving soil health from the aspect of soil nutrient adequacy can be carried out through a massive and organized program to restore the nutrients contained in empty fruit bunches, especially for independent smallholder oil palm plantations. Meanwhile, actions can be taken to increase the role of beneficial microbes that have the functions mentioned above, either through the introduction of tested species in nurseries and plantings or through habitat management by planting certain intercrops that are suitable and have economic value or ground cover plants. Given the vast area of oil palm, the role of humans as a determining component of disease epidemics, and the need for good planning in management with a pre-emptive strategy, the involvement of various stakeholders (multi-stakeholders) is essential for the successful management of BPB disease and maintaining sustainability. future palm oil production.
