Staff Activity: BBTV Annual Meeting 2019

On 7 - 10 October 2019 Prof. Dr. Sri Hendrastuti Hidayat attended the annual meeting of research cooperation between countries held at the Institute of Plant Breeding, University of the Philippine Los Banos. Research collaboration with the theme "BBTV Mitigation: Community Management in Nigeria, and Screening Wild Banana Progenitors for Resistance" has been initiated through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation since 2015. Research collaboration covering various aspects / fields of science involves several institutions, namely The University of Queensland-Australia, University of Philippine at Los Banos, Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Science and Vietnam National University of Agriculture, Faculty of Agriculture-IPB University, Faculty of Agriculture-Gadjah Mada University, Research Institute for Tropical Fruit-Solok Plants, National Horticultural Research Institute - and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture-Nigeria, Bioversity International-Belgium, Kew Botanical Garden- and the University of Cambridge-UK, The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven- and the Meise-Belgium Botanic Gardens, and CIRAD-France.

Through this research collaboration, it is hoped that banana germplasm sources from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam will be identified which are resistant to Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV). The research activities carried out are also expected to supplement knowledge and information about the status of BBTV in Southeast Asia, including genetic diversity, host range, and vector insects.
