Nadzirum Mubin, The Best Young Scientist I - Indonesian Entomology Association 2021

The Indonesian Entomology Association (PEI) on its 51st anniversary held a series of activities. One of the activities carried out is the Young Scientist Award which will be held on Tuesday, October 26, 2021. This activity aims to provide a stage for young researchers to dare to appear and be known by the wider community. In addition, PEI also has high hopes for young researchers who will later carry on the baton of research, especially in the field of Entomology.

The Young Scientist Award activity was attended by representatives from various branches in PEI. Total of 10 young researchers were sent to participate in this event, namely PEI Makassar, Malang, Purwokerto, Bandung, Bogor, Palembang and Padang branches.

Nadzirum Mubin, SP., MSi who is one of the young researchers from the Department of Plant Protection, IPB University representing PEI Bogor Branch. Nadzir's presentation was about the effect of attraction and death of the Stingless bee (Tetragonula laeviceps) to 2 types of insecticides. In his presentation, Nadzir mentioned that insecticide type B (b.a. Spinetoram) gave a high level of interest (more than 70%) in olfactometric testing. However, in topical testing, insecticide B gave a mortality rate of 100% at 48 hours after observation (JSP). These are two opposite sides, because bees give a high level of attraction to a type of insecticide but bees die when exposed to that insecticide.

Nadzir also mentioned that to produce 1 kg of honey, bees have to visit 5.7 million flowers. When plants are contaminated with insecticide liquid, it will have an impact and can even cause death. Studies on the adverse effects of insecticides on insect pests have generally been tested, but their impact on beneficial insects has not been widely studied, especially in Indonesia. It is a challenge as well as an opportunity to conduct research on a wider scale, he concluded.

Total of 13 PEI Branch heads who participated in the assessment of young researchers in this event were PEI Branch leaders from Ambon, Manado, Jambi, Palu, Makassar, Denpasar, Malang, Yogyakarta, Pontianak, DKI Jakarta, Pekanbaru, West Sumatra and Palembang. The assessment is carried out based on the presentation method, the depth of the material, the presentation material, the timeliness, and the way of answering in the discussion.

Based on the results of the summation of the assessments, NADZIRUM MUBIN, SP., MSi got the highest score of 437.08, followed by the 2nd place winner, namely Rina Rachmawati, SP., M.Eng (representative from Malang) with a score of 435.38, and the 3rd place winner, Dr. Yani Maharani, SP., MSi (representative from Bandung) with a score of 423.18. Nadzir was awarded as The Best Young Scientist I beating several representatives from other PEI branches. The award was announced at the PEI Workshop on Saturday, October 30, 2021.
